WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Once upon a time…

There were two storytellers: Maggie Weber and Susan Samm, who discovered their shared love of the oral tradition of storytelling whilst working together in Early Year’s education.

A quest followed…

Susan and Maggie set out to elaborate and hone their skills, journeying through a labyrinth of storytelling, voice, mime, and drama schools. It worked! The pair developed a dynamic and interactive storytelling style gained them recognition as the region’s leading storytelling partnership.

In addition Susan and Maggie shared their skills as they developed successful storytelling workshops for a range of settings.

Currently Susan is taking time out from performance storytelling and associated work to bring up her young family, watch this space...

Meanwhile StoryRoots performances and other projects continue with Maggie and other storytelling ‘buddies’.

About Maggie

BACKGROUND

My early years were the time before technology dominated childhood, when children spent long days playing outdoors and where oral storytelling was a natural aspect of daily life. I loved it!

As I reluctantly moved on from childhood it was a natural transition to follow a career working with children and young people both in education and leisure, at home and abroad. Here, the gems of my childhood set me in good stead as I told stories to entertain, to educate, to soothe, to heal and to enjoy.

It was around the year 2000 when I decided that storytelling would become ‘my way of life’ rather than an aspect of my life. With a desire to give my best to audiences, I set about building on my extensive Early Years training and experience with a wide compass of storytelling skills.

Alongside this, over the past two decades, I have enjoyed studying music for both personal and professional development, the latter including extensive exploration and study of music for young children. This has given me deep understanding of the power and value of music to children’s holistic development. Music and Storytelling – A perfect combination!

TODAY

My joy is in engaging in performance storytelling and leading storytelling workshops for children and adults. This happens extensively, though not exclusively in schools.

I have a particular interest in working with storytelling outdoors.

My storytelling style  is high energy, participative, inclusive and fun. I am happy working both in a solo capacity and also with musician, Jackie Allen. Together Jackie and I present: 'Musical Stories and Dancing Tales'.
